Description
This ultimate one-pan cheesy Salisbury steak recipe is a comforting dish that combines juicy steak patties with creamy mushroom gravy and melted cheese, perfect for busy weeknights or cozy Sundays.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
- 1/2 cup (60g) breadcrumbs (use gluten-free if needed)
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 8 oz (225g) mushrooms, sliced (button or cremini work well)
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 2 cups (480ml) beef broth
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for gluten-free)
- 1/2 cup (120ml) heavy cream or half-and-half
- 1 cup (100g) shredded cheese (cheddar or a blend)
- Fresh parsley for garnish
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined—don’t overwork the meat! Shape into 4 oval patties.
- Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add another splash of oil if needed, then toss in the diced onion and sliced mushrooms. Cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they’re softened and starting to brown.
- Sprinkle the flour over the mushroom mixture and stir to coat. Cook for 1-2 minutes, then gradually whisk in the beef broth and soy sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens (about 3-4 minutes).
- Stir in the heavy cream and return the Salisbury steaks to the pan. Spoon the gravy over the patties and let simmer for an additional 3-5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Sprinkle shredded cheese on top of the patties, cover the skillet, and let it sit for a minute until the cheese melts.
- Garnish with chopped parsley and serve hot with your favorite sides, like mashed potatoes or steamed veggies!
Notes
Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. If you want a lighter option, swap out the heavy cream for a lighter milk or dairy-free alternative.
